Amazing owlet up-righted itself and in a hurry. Head up and using wings.
1 of 2 photos.
Being young and little experience with climbing trees, sometimes owlets return to earth unplanned.
On 6/1 just after 6pm the tree branches rustles and owlet hangs upside down, trying to upright itself, but at this point, no where to go but down.
They do manage to land gently and may greatly be due to the facts they are light weights. Adult females weigh between 1.75 – 2.5 lbs. Males weigh between 1.3 and 1.8 lbs. Their wingspan is about 38-42″.
Young owls at fledge may weight 50-75% of their adult weight, so estimating them to weight less than one pound has it’s advantages. There had been a heavy rain and the ground was soft. The size of the wings would help slow down a fall. Owlet made out well…
6/1 (didn’t write time) Before Einstein reenters the perch, Owlet receives food drop. Still unsure who fledged first, so it’s “owlet.”
This photo captures one of my fav photos moments in time, which is from the inside cam facing out, the b/w images match the expression. Amazing now to find this…
A treat to see. Photo 3 of 3 from food drops.
6/1 (didn’t write the time) after Einstein perched for the second time of the day.
One of the last moments where the three were together atop the perch before second fledge. 2 of 3 food drops photos.
From 6/1 at 7:55am, after first fledge, many visits to the nest box and a few hours before second fledge. Beautiful!!!
Sorting many photos, here is 1 of 3 photos from food drops.
Watched Einstein as long as possible, young owlet disappeared up the tree behind the leaves and is living happily ever after as we all hope.
Added two circles since the young owl looks small. Difficult to see, but the tiny bluish color spot is owlet.
Young owlet Einstein had only fledged one minute prior and meets a squirrel.
3 of 3.
Left circle is where young owl was perched on a suspect branch, I will say suspect branch, saw cute face and wings but unable to see any branches.
Right circle is where adult/Luna landed and searched around before flying off.

Einstein watches and learns that squirrels are to be dealt with.
The tree just to the left of cam tree has at least one young owl attached high up. In previous photo owlet was shown in a blue circle on this tree and at this time.
A squirrel attempts to climb the tree where the owlet/owlets were located. Tesla and Newton fledged the day before. Adult/Luna swoops in and takes a swipe at the squirrel. I did see the tail as the squirrel managed to get around the tree and escape. Luna flew to a close by tree.
6/2 at 1:13pm 1 of 3 photos.
Einstein reacts to a squirrel climbing the nearby tree.
Minutes before young owlet fledges.
Fledge of third owlet, who attempted a leap atop the box and had a gentle landing on the ground after taking one too many steps backwards.
6/2/2015 1:31PM
Fledge of second owlet, who took a leap and flew out from the nest box. 2 of 2.
6/1/2015 12:05pm
Fledge of second owlet, who took a leap and flew out from the nest box. 1 of 2, since outdoor cam also got the first flight.
6/1/2015 12:05pm
Fledge of first owlet, who hopped atop nest box then hopped onto the tree and climbed out of view.
Again, these will be random orders as I file and go along, many photos are Too Cute and I will share the best photos possible.
6/1/2015 6:09am I will attempt to add dates and times going forward, if time allows me.
4 of 4. Einstein below the nest box. One week ago today. Too cute!
3 of 4. Huge effort to get atop the box.
2 of 4. Stretching, flapping hooked beak atop nest box. Take a look at the position of Einstein’s feet. One more step backwards and it’s going to happen.
1 of 4. Einstein’s fledge one week ago today.
These photos have time and date stamp. Archives had
date when I captured a photo copy. Time varies from 1:31pm- 1:58pm.
Photos here have the close estimated date and time of fledge.
This was minutes before Einsteins fledge. Taken from archives, the time was about 1:30pm.
Adult flies up and chases a squirrel as an owlet was up already up the tree, while Einstein looks on.
3 of 3. Right turned, straight ahead, left turned, depends how one sees it. Stunning owl.
2 of 3. Same time frame, looking around inside.
1 of 3. photos of adult visiting after all three fledged. Doing a count to make sure no one is left?
Archive date and time of 6/2 5:37PM.
How do you keep your feet on the ground when you know you were born to fly- Song by Sarah Evans and second that by Einstein.
Einstein, left alone in nest box, as seen on quite a few occasions, adult visited to feed. Loved the adventurous look in the eyes. Feisty.
Will be randomly adding photos to enjoy and remember when.
Here is a fine example. Practice flaps. Too cute.
From May 7, 2015.
Too Cute! Thank you for allowing me to post image from FB.
Here they are, left to right. Einstein, Newton and Tesla.
Some say life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage.
Three brave owlets, born to fly, leap out into the world. It was one week ago today that Newton and Tesla fledged.
Image dated a month and a day ago.
