Barred Owls 2015 — 2,483 Comments

1. Female, prey and both eggs. Gooood Morning!

   Need confirmed it was in fact not a chipmunk. In the IR it was not possible for me to recognize certain features. But, she’s had chipmunk before and I couldn’t ID it as one.

   

2. 5:48am quiet morning, then in the distant, hooting…
   She begins to softly whistle.

   5:54am Male enters box. She coos and what a Beautiful sound.
   The entire time he was in the nest box she cooed.

   Can it get any better? He’s brought prey. A mouse/rat. I’m thinking rat.

   Only saw the prey after he exited. She swallowed it whole.

   Both eggs are nicely warm in the nest bowl. It’s 6:00am Life is good.

3. Digging in the nest bowl, pops her head up with a feather in the beak. Looks around, those expressions are “too cute.”

   She shimmies once again and semi covers the egg out on the edge. She rotates and misses. Surely, she will tuck it back in soon.

   What a Fantastic day!

4. 9:15pm. She has created a soft fluffy down pile around the eggs. One egg is/was on the edge. After she reorganized a little the eggs drifted apart just a bit. One egg is unknowingly out. As the eggs got separated she seemed unaware.

5. 8:30pm Luna is back inside, shimmies atop her eggs.

6. Hi Fran!

   Mike, feel free to delete my photo, no need for doubles, it’s all good. Waited 5 minutes, before adding, seems Fran and I had the same thoughts.

   lol

7. Nice view of the eggs tonight.

   

8. 3:03PM Egg #2. Congrats!

   

9. 11:43 Luna appeared to topple over for a second. She immediately regained composure. Shimmied into nest bowl. Seen eagles do that many times but first time I’ve seen her shimmy on the egg

   3:03pm Two eggs!

10. Since 6:30am She’s rotated herself twice, circling. Noticed similar behavior when she laid egg.

    Seven o’clock a.m. seems an unwelcome visitor is atop the box.
    She is on alert. Very still and piercing glares at the entrance.

    A busy morning at the nest box so far this morning.

12. Female is on egg, raining hard, coming inside a little. She has shiny beads of water on her right wing.

13. Quiet day it appears. Was away today. Glad to see things look normal.
    Great pics, the cam gives us all a great opportunity.

    Great capture. One minute apart. Love it. Luna was so gentle with her egg.

15. Well, Fran, we need to stop meeting like this. Here we go again with nearly identical shots.

16. I am always amazed at the gentle touch of Birds of Prey when they rotate their eggs and then later as they interact with their nestlings. I thought this captured it well as the Talons, those lethal weapons, brushed the egg.

19. Love the names. Thank you for telling us. The pictures of the outside of the nest box and area are great to see. Now can visualize Luna looking out when only her tail feathers are visible.lol

20. I will definitely try without upsetting them. If you would lile to call them by names my wife has named the female Luna and the male Noche.

21. Andrew, maybe you can get a picture of Pop Owl when the opportunity presents itself. It’s a nice Owl box. The Owls are fortunate to have you.

22. Thank you, Andrew, for the pictures. I was hoping you would post what the Owl Box looked like. What a cute Owlet from last year. Nice pictures! It gives us a good perspective of the area.
