Barred Owls 2015 — 2,483 Comments

  1. Luna is on her way out and owlet gives a tug at her tail feathers.

Two owlets scratched at the walls, used their beaks and wings trying to climb. Not as successful as earlier today, but they were hopping and flapping wings too.

  2. Trying to fit under, remember it wasn’t that long ago when they were pushing to get out from underneath, look at them today.

  3. A good size comparison.

Owlets wouldn’t all fit beneath her wings so easily now.

  4. Luna’s feathers are looking much better. The inside of the nest box had some of her feathers looking worn. Seems she’s eating more, I imagine she baths at the stream and preens to regain her optimum health.

  5. Luna coos and whistles to her owlets during feeding. She wagged food for them and they didn’t seem too interested in food. Always a good sign they have had plenty already.
Her face is down and to the left, holding prey.

  6. An adventuresome day.

Now, Two things run through my mind… one is they were hopping and ran out of room.

  7. Owlet was hopping onto the cam and using its beak in an attempt to perch. Currently #1 and #2 are hopping and grabbing onto the nest box sides. Practicing climbing and getting a grip. At the entrance/prime spot and underneath overhead cam.

  8. Brilliant. 3 of 3.

As the day goes on I scan many photos and randomly picking out clusters of three.

So much to share and not enough time to put them in order.

  9. 3 of 3 from the food drop.
Luna on her way out and soon after, owlet followed her to the perch, this is my last screen shot before owlet hopped up and onto perch.

  10. Will add a few photos from Luna’s food drop/visit, which was just prior to owlets perching.

    Image 1 of 3. Incoming prey/suspect junco.

  11. #2 look out, #3 center, #1 against the back wall (but still staring outside.)

    Image 2 of 3.

  12. A shift change, from left to right.
#2 is at the look out.
#3 sits low looking at #1, who is looking at the cam.

When they sit or stand together is when you see their more true
sizes. As youngest is on haunches, it appears much smaller.

Oldest just hopped across sibling and was up near overhead cam.

  13. The Young Barred Owls of NY.

Clockwise, near the cam is the oldest/#1, first to perch. farthest to the right, middle/#2 and left center, opened beak, youngest/#3.

Young owls fledge at 4 to 5 weeks. Today, oldest is 27 days. Middle is 26 days and youngest is 25 days.

Oldest has set their sights on outside. Each time I check in, he/she is staring outside.

  14. Owlet has decided to hunch down a little. Adding both photos to show the size of the owlet. Also, their beautiful surroundings.

(touched up color to maximize owlets features.)
