Barred Owls 2015 — 2,483 Comments

  1. So far today I’ve missed Lunas outing and her return (live) Here’s hoping for better luck with capturing two drops today.

  2. Seems owlets enjoy the warmth of her wing. So far, no ones pushing to get out, which is normally what happens. As the morning warms up, surely that will change.

A wren visits and creates a disruption, lol. The scratching sound of tiny feet and the voice got the owlets stirring, but they settled fast. This photo is more sharp, showing Luna’s amazing wings color pattern.

  3. Luna returned after a short outing and I didn’t see prey. But, she immediately covered the owlets with her wing. She is fully aware of the chilly temperature.

  4. According to Weatherbug, it’s 38° in the nest area. Luna is inside the nest box. At 6:37am as I attempted a group photo, she left. It’s the coldest part of the day, I’m thinking she’s out for a hunt or a short outing to relief herself and stretch. Owlets are huddled, same as last evening. Two out of the three are looking up and out.

  5. Cold snap tonight, temps dipping to about 44° Curious will Luna stay with her owlets inside? Hope to catch a feeding soon.

  6. Owlets jostle for the prime spot. These two, one pushes and one hunkers down. Both express sounds of disapproval. They are too funny.

  7. The push for the prime spot is on. Owlets jostle for the prime spot, front and center to the entrance. Funny.

  8. Bonding time appears to grow almost as much as the owlets grow… Luna is positioning herself closer to the prime spot.

    “Lean on me”

  9. After feeding, Luna once again picks and cleans. The owlets do the same. They pick up bits, learning valuable skills from Luna.

Seems fun for them, but it is an important life lesson too.

  10. At about 9:40am Luna pulled out fuzzy prey. Youngest eats, the other two seem more interested in resting and looking outside.

Noche and Luna are keeping their young very well fed. There is never shoving for food. It is great to see them line up and get their fill.

  11. After feeding today, youngest preened the oldest, middle owlet was in fact in the middle, laying down. Saw head and beak but no clear photo.

All appear to be doing fantastic. Last couple days has been a lot of misses for me catching food drops, again today, will try to catch some Live action.

  12. Today May 13, 2015. The next two images are from one year ago today.

-1. Stunning Luna surveying her land before flying out.
-2. Beautiful baby owlet Sol at feeding time.

Gives us a sense of the area now and the stage of owlets compared to Sol. Youngest owlet #3 and Sol share the same birthday/hatch date of May, 1.

  13. 2 of 3. Playful owlet, the youngest. Also note, a good size prey was in the top right corner.

  14. Three more great photos in a row from yesterday. Owlets played and had a fantastic day. Picking in the mulch, playing with small twigs, preening. Life is good for the barred’s. 1 of 3.

  15. Another great photo from yesterday. Showing owlet upright and amazing growth. This is why I backtrack a little to post daily as much as possible, since they change so much everyday.

  16. Couldn’t wait, just captured this image… How tall is the owlet..??!!!!!!
