9:45am and 10:01am the wren visits. Luna must not be close by.
Haven’t seen a wren enter the nest box yet this season, it hops around the perch area and it’s silhouette can be seen.

As egg watch 2015 counts down, this is my first screen capture from last seasons (first) egg. It arrived on 3/28 and my first sighting was about 8:52am. She had her brood patch before or after the egg? Unsure.

A photo in color from early as 8:02am on this date, she had plucked her feathers and within an hour the first egg as visible. So which comes first the brood patch or the egg?

continued… Exciting and getting distracted watching her, but last season Luna plucked out her breast feathers to create a brood patch, then surrounding her body with the feathers. This too is a sign to watch for.

The brood patch is a bare patch of skin that is makes it easier for birds to transfer heat to their eggs during incubation.

The wren visits and Luna chatters her beak with displeasure. Her tail is slightly elevated and I am unsure if she was posturing due to the tiny visitor or showing signs of contractions.

I was searching websites for signs an egg may be close and the female will slowly move her tail up and down and fluff from time to time, then voila an egg.

Sol’s last known photo that I know of was reposted here, on March 7, 2015. If you scroll down it’s there. At that time Andrew said Sol was heavily guarded and good as far as anyone could tell.

Small visitor singing “pretty bird” earlier, but it was a short visit.

It was one year ago today that two small wrens entered the nest box and wreaked havoc on Luna’s housekeeping work. Luna would continue to shimmy and adjust the nest according to her plans. It would come to be that the wrens visited a few times through the season and expressed their discontent with the Barred’s. Never phased the owls.

Currently, 6:42am Exciting, I believe she/he may be on the perch, hearing movement now.

As of 12:00am this morning, the Barred’s are closer, louder calls and deeper tones in the calls. /fb

I imagine at that time being anywhere near the nest area was a bit dangerous to say the least. Recalling the comments saying that Sol was very well protected on the ground. I just bet. (Reposting after attempting to adjust photo.)
