    As of 12:00am this morning, the Barred’s are closer, louder calls and deeper tones in the calls. /fb

    I imagine at that time being anywhere near the nest area was a bit dangerous to say the least. Recalling the comments saying that Sol was very well protected on the ground. I just bet.

  2. Just read that after Sol left the box you saw him with his parents doing what owls do and he seemed to be handling his injured leg. That made me happy.

  6. Wrens are outside of the box. Hearing them chirp and heard movement. No sighting unless I missed it.

    Editing to add, I saw a silhouette of a wren in the sunshine. THis happened last season. Barred’s visit, wren visits, Barred’s take over the nest box.

  9. I’m sorry I didn’t update everyone, but there was an issue with the network wire due to this weather. I was able to fix it today since the temps were hovering close to 32 degrees. I am hopeful that we will have a visit any day now. The temps are forcasted to be close to 32 degrees for a few days straight so I’m hoping that will help. Last years visit was 2/27 if I remember correctly. Cross your fingers and keep your eyes open. 😀

    I imagine in the snow, they have to go a little farther out of the area to find food.

  14. Groundhog day. Punxsutawney Phil says six more weeks of winter.
    I noticed occasional snowflakes entering the nest box and checked the weather in Wappinger’s Falls, NY. Currently 10.3°F in the area.

  16. View is slightly adjusted. We can now see above the one foot mark from the ruler. Only slight changes in the nesting materials, really have to look.

    Birds chirping in the distance.

  17. Knocks and chirps, then the silhouetted figure of a bird, which I’d be inclined to suspect as being a cardinal.

    About 9:04am there was a visitor which may have been a wren.
    Didn’t get a good glimpse or photo, but it seemed to be a different bird.

  18. Daytime image showing the colored version. Do not notice anything changed or moved around yet.

    About 8:46am, what I like to call the “sundial” appears.
    Bright sunshine comes in and moves left to right across the back of the nest box.

    Heard what I believe are two great horned owl here, cooing and calling in the wee hours of the night. They woke me, being very close by!

  23. We haven’t seen any activity since the last visit. Barred Owls down south seem to be starting their nesting activity. It seems we are on track for an end of FEB/ early march start to the nesting season. I would like to bring everything online at once so plan on next weekend for a live feed.

  24. If I were a barred owl, I’d take refuge from the elements inside a lovely nest box, but if you need to do repairs, may be best they wait.

    The Black Vultures here are showing courting rituals, its so amazing.
