  1. 1:19:33pm Luna to Sol, you and I will get through this together.

1:25:54pm Sol to Luna, I think I can. Ready to give it a go.

    1:25:55pm Sol’s first steps.
    1:25:58pm

  2. Since dawn, Luna has been preening Sol’s leg and hip. She knows.
A few times Sol bit at her, annoyed that she was pushing the owlet.
Time on posted preening photo is 1:19:33p.m. Minutes later Sol stood up.

Didn’t last too long, but a Huge step for the owlet today.

Luna is amazing, Sol is amazing. Mighty Sol, discovering it can be done.

  3. Possibly, Another first today, as Sol was semi-upright, I saw a bowel movement.
Tail was wiggling and out it came. Sort of had head down a bit and tail went up. Was it deliberate or by chance.? It was definitely a new event and I’m leaving it at that!

  4. Exercising, having a great day. The sharpest photo I could get, Sol is working hard today. Practicing the bob and weave, stretching… excellent balance and wing stretch, got good stretch of the legs. Sol went all out, resting a bit now!

  5. Sol is still under wing, but trying to get out. Luna is using her gallop call, feeding time!

  6. Another view of Luna’s feathers and yes, Sol is underneath, definitely warm. It is a chilly day today.

  7. Luna preening, another amazing view, her tail is to the camera, so once again, this is her right wing.

  8. Sol is 4 weeks old today. Newest observed behavior this morning, bobbing and weaving to get an even better look outside. Yesterday, made a wobbly attempt but overnight Sol has aced the bob and weave, so funny and too cute.

Bluejays are loud and very close to the nest box, same as yesterday.

  9. Adding one more, a rare visual this morning, Luna’s under feathers. Sunlight streams in across her wing. I had to add this photo, too.

  10. Another Fantastic morning in the nest box.

Keeping Sol warm. This photo was just before feeding. Sol is getting nippy again today, bit at Luna’s legs and face. She doesn’t react at all.
9:18am Feeding, Luna gave Sol feathers with saw dust and it was rejected and dropped. Nice to have the ability to be selective!

Plenty of wing flaps and preening today.

  11. Another photo of Luna’s under wing and Sol. beautiful!
    Unidentified furry prey.

  12. Nothing like an offering of some tasty small rodent to bring Sol back to the business at hand – an early morning meal.

  13. Bright, alert, beautiful. “You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy…..” This will date me, although I love John Denver too.

  14. An absolutely brilliant movie, The Legend Of The Guardians.
Soren and Kludd brother barn owls, little sister Eglantine, the first 30 seconds of the movie, it had me.

Moral compass may be the message, in the movie they call it “the gizzard”. great for kids and adults as well.

Wise old owl and mentor Lyze of Kiel, meets young Soren and asks him can he fly. Response was, well,… I have started to branch.

Pictured are Big brother Soren and little sister Eglantine.

  15. Better view of prey, it may be a shrew. longer pointy snout.

Luna and Sol are awake, a lot of preening this morning.

  16. Sol is 4 weeks old today!

Luna preens the top of Sol’s head and owlet chirps. Luna is standing, Sol is somewhat tucked in. Currently 42° in the nest area, heading for 71. Surprised Sol isn’t pushing to get under her chest feathers. Resting and looking quite comfy.

Breakfast is in the nest bowl, not in the corner. Luna many be encouraging self feeding, prey is a mouse.

  17. Feathers are really coming in. Sol was exercising and playing, tossed a feather.

    Currently, napping upright.

  18. Currently 56° a cool front came, owls relax and nap much more comfortably, I imagine.

  19. Half an hour after food drop, Sol’s still unsure and staying behind Luna, away from the entrance. Takes some getting used to, another owl visiting.
