Rose, I expressed my concern regarding the possibility of this condition three days ago. The Administrator graciously responded that several people, presumably experts, were observing the Owlet’s development. None of us who comments here regularly is an expert, and so we will have to be patient until we hear from those who are, as difficult as that is. We all wish the very best for this lovely Barred Owl family and hope Sol will develop into a strong and healthy Owl with a long successful life in the wild.
And Mom returns.

First a feathered hat and now an Elizabethan ruff.
Already the little Owlet has the expression of mature wisdom.
And, then, the many faces of Sol as it waits Luna’s return.
A sequence of screen captures. The first is an earlier one showing Luna, her Owlet, and that indestructible egg which refuses to go away. Surprised that Luna hasn’t pushed it out of the way. At times it has been somewhat of a hindrance for Sol as it tries to maneuver its way around.

Airplane flew over and once again Mighty Sol kicks into defender mode.
Many times now, owlet opens beak and appears to yawn, stress or showing a fierce side, unsure, but too cute. Seems owlet uses this behavior when agitated by loud noises. The mic is amazing, hearing a mosquito may be.
Arrived here to find Sol alone, blinking one eye, than the other, couldn’t capture a photo, but so cute.
Luna flew in with prey, Noche follows, stops by for a quick visit. He flew off and Luna, as usual, peaks in on Sol before re-entering the nest box.

Patterns in feathers.
Feathers are blending. Blue circle is Sol.
Sharpest face photo so far today,too cute. Sol was getting very close to cam and pecked it twice.
Noticed Sol has long feather lashes now. Same as Luna’s. Owlet was tucked in staying warm, eyes open and one of Luna’s feathers was brushing Sol’s eye, then it happened, a feather eyelid appeared.
May have missed a good photo, will check them again, but interesting to see.

Sol is 22 days old today, egg is 53 days.
The egg continues to get moved around the nest box, from front to back.
A stealthy visit. Noche flew to perch, quickly left, Luna and Sol did not react in any way that suggests a food drop.
There are 254 Followers of this nest box. People from all walks of life are keeping watch. I won’t be commenting on this again, just passing along the positive thought, that those most qualified are aware and taking note of the issue. Meanwhile, we home viewers can simply enjoy them and continue to document new events and activities. Everyone knows of the issue. We have a great opportunity to watch and learn how the owls handle the situation and wait and see what develops next. Time to wrap this up, Noche paid a visit minutes ago! Sol appears to have a splayed leg. Is there anything that can be done for the little guy? It’s really hard to watch anymore. How can he/survive in the wild? Sorry, I’m just really concerned. I’m sure there are raptor sanctuaries in the area that possibly can help.

Mighty Sol, sweet owlet and protector of the nest box, is 3 weeks old today.
Similar photo, Sol was seen eating, open beak! Now, egg is visible. Chipmunk dinner.

Luna feeds Sol a chipmunk. Lovely cooing.
Luna joins Sol for sleep, couldn’t keep track of the egg. Beautiful owls!
