  3. Feeding of entrails — stomach, intestines — just exactly what a hungry Owlet relishes.

  4. This sequence begins at 7:27 P.M. with Owlet waiting for Mom to return. Don’t know when Luna left, but she returned at 7:33 P.M. with what looked like a rat. Only saw the entrails clearly, which Owlet ate with great relish.

  5. Egg shows up at the entrance, Luna and Sol feed on a bird, shortly after this photo was taken.

  6. Another beautiful day in the nest area. Have a photo awaiting moderation. The thick green canopy of leaves, Luna doesn’t receive the incoming rays of light she so much enjoyed. Which may be a good thing, keeping it cooler inside.

    As I type, a suspect chickadee pays a visit to the nest box and disrupts the quiet. Sol cries out loud, Luna gives 3-4 note coo and Sol quiets down immediately, but not for long.

  7. View is outstanding! Imagine Luna and Noche are also changing their flight patterns through the trees. Sight lines are surely changed.

    Meanwhile, on the interior cam, Luna is assisting and supporting Sol.
    Look forward to seeing Sol looking outside someday.

  9. Chatter and coos between Luna and Sol are changing. More of a deep whistling sound today, unsure who is was.

    Forgot to add this one, beautiful face markings, the feathers are coming in fast, changes from morning to night. Similar to this morning’s other close up face photo, but this may be a bit more sharp.

  10. FOR THE RECORD: 05/18

    Characteristic Barred Owl plumage color and patterns have been developing nicely as seen here. Owlet’s secondary down coat has not become thick enough for it to be left unattended for too long on these cold nights and mornings. Mom will continue to brood. Noticed that Luna was gone for a very short time last night, for example, from 8:22 until 8:34 P.M. Young owlets are subject to chills. I have seen Luna’s Owlet shivering at times.

    Here we see Owlet stretching wings when it was left on its own on the previous night. This is part of a sequence posted above.

  12. FOR THE RECORD: 05/18

    Luna was away from the nest from 8:22 to 8:34 P.M. last night. Owlet made a valiant effort on its own to raise itself up – an important stage in development. If Luna is present, it often braces itself against her to do this and to strengthen muscles. Here we see another wing stretch.

  13. Sol is getting more feathers. Trying to stand, come on owlet, show us your knees.

  14. Currently 40.3° in the nest area. At 5:00a.m. it was 38.8°. Heading for 69. Cooler evening again tonight, 20% chance of rain.

    Snuggling this morning is good after a feeding at 6:26a.m.

    Sol is 18 days old today! Egg day 49.

  19. Nice photo of wing feathers, Luna and Sol are having a new and different chat, since she returned to the nest box.
