  4. Super pics Lynn and Carol! Thanks for sharing. I often tune in to only seeing a part of Luna up close and personal, and miss the baby.

  5. Owlet is 13 days old today. Sitting up on haunches. Already has a curiosity for the cam and sunlight outside. Has on occasion taken Luna’s window seat. Owlet should be standing up in the next couple days, hard to believe.

    Amazing to watch the progress. Sitting up longer periods of time, napping upright. Eyes wide open. Preening again, currently, safe n warm beneath Luna’s chest feathers.

  6. This screen capture and those posted by Lynn show how nicely the owlet’s thick, secondary coat is coming in. There’s a very nice contrast with the white natal down remaining. We should also begin to see a suggestion of the color and shape of the “bars.” With warmer days and possibly nights, brooding will become more intermittent. Owlet will have much more freedom – great for it and great for us.

    Poor mousy in storage.

  7. Deb, personally, I think that either the Spanish or the Latin for “Shadow” would be perfect. The image you suggest says it all, making the connection with both Noche and Luna.

    Andrew, if I may be so bold, I think that “Sol” would be a magnificent name for a Bald Eagle who hunts in the daytime and seemingly soars upward to the Sun. With rare exception, most owl species hunt from dusk to dawn under the shadow of darkness (unintended). As has been said (by someone?), “Owls own the night.” Just my two to ten cents worth.

  10. 12:17pm Finally, we can see! Luna is preening owlet frequently.
    Seems to be very soothing.

    12:18pm Owlet naps/sleeps upright, too cute.

    12:24pm Owlet was self-preening.

  14. Saw her leave, once today. She’s been in and out a few times. Just after this photo cam went to IR. Lucky.

  15. I may have missed the official announcement on the name for the owlet, but if I didn’t here are two more thoughts: Sombra or Umbra (Spanish and Latin) respectively for “Shadow”. Which the owlet (when grown) will cast in the moonlight while hunting.

  17. Had set up these photos to add and noticed at 9:17am the suspect tear. At 9:33am decided to post them as planned and left my comments unchanged.

  18. There is a suspect hole in the top of the egg, the size of Luna’s beak.

    This bewildering egg, as it has been all along. But, out of the corner of my eye, it seemed the suspect flap moved and Luna appeared to possibly sample it. Or perhaps it’s just a feather or lighting, as many times before. Time will tell.

  21. Owlet is 12 days old today!
    Egg is still intact, a pillow for owlet, Day 43.

    6:30am feeding, owlet wasn’t interested. Luna brushed beak filled with food, mainly feathers, against owlets beak and nothing…

    8:26am hungry, good feeding. Once again Luna fed many small morsels, owlet had to work to get the food. A good time together.

    Luna and owlet are more quiet at feedings now. Not much cooing by either of them.

    9:03am They are resting, although Luna is unhappy with the bluejays, can’t see her expression, but she’s probably got a bad face, they are noisy today. Yes, she bit cam again.

  23. Noche did pay a second visit at 9:30pm. Saw him on the outside perch then he may have entered the nest box.

    A lot of movement inside the nestbox at that time.

    Great jaws. I can see how they can swallow prey hole!

  24. Owlets eyes are wide open when Noche appears with a frog. So sweet.
    Same expression a short time later when Noche returned with some small furry critter, possibly a rat (couldn’t see tail). Not fast enough to capture an image. I didn’t expect that Noche would return so quickly.
