  1. Something New!!!
    I forgot to add this earlier, Luna has a “flap” of feathers, she is using these for covering, protecting and supporting her owlet.

    Almost like a rail. Two little feet and back is propped up by Luna’s band of feathers. This by far keeps them cooler and at the same time satisfies Luna with direct contact to the owlet.

    From this angle, the egg looks “normal, but we know by now that it probably isn’t. A view from a single angle can be very misleading. We’re so fortunate here to have expert camera work.

  4. Surprise. Luna picked up feathery prey and dropped it alongside Owlet.
    Encouraging self-feeding is my guess. Absolutely brilliant!!!

  8. Yes, indeed, Owlet is developing very quickly. The thick secondary coat I mentioned in an earlier post has begun to come in. Was able to see it this morning looking from different angles. It can be seen here and in prior screen capture.

  10. Such a strange look to the egg. Although it appears to be “starred,” I believe that is just a result of soiling and some rather rough treatment.

    Owlet still has its lovely white natal down. This will be replaced by a second thicker downy coat in a couple of weeks. The second coat will take on the distinguishing colors of Barred Owls. Looking forward to that next stage of development.

  11. Feathers are coming in, visible on the head and neck so far. All the pushing and planning the big escape, too tired… awww.

    Luna cleaned up the area and rotated herself. Her back is to the cam now.

  13. Timing is everything! We’ve been around the color wheel today. A rosy pink colored photo is awaiting moderation.

  14. Andrew, just another thought regarding a name for the owlet and in keeping with the “night” theme — estrellada.

    I know that noche estrellada would be confusing and too long. Just love the way it sounds, though.

    We defer to you. After all, you and your wife have been kind enough to share these treasures with us.

  15. Sol is fluffy white, Beautiful owlet is 11 day old today.

    Day 42 for egg, viability of the egg worn thin.

    Luna looks stunning as ever. Sunshine on her face, sol/sun beneath her.

  16. A wonderful image of contentment here. Luna had been preening her little one.

  18. Exterior cam area has turned into a bounty of green leaves!

    Unsure if this has anything to do with Luna’s flight pattern changing or not. The last two evenings I saw her incoming she flew almost straight at the camera and swooped around.

    Hadn’t thought about it until now, their sight line is constantly changing.

    The 2014 owlet is unofficially called Sol. As we wait to hear from Andrew. Estrella is Sol’s older sibling. Simply mentioned to attempt to clear up any confusion. It’s all good!

  21. Andrew, I feel honored to be in such good company — great minds and all. I’m not familiar, however, with Strix varia (in italics) protocol. Would Estrella I be offended or pleased to have a namesake?

  23. An interesting feeding indeed. Luna fed only tiny morsels. Held food in her beak and owlet has to tug and work for the food. A life lesson for sure. When at other times, Luna gorges the little one.
