Barred Owls 2015 — 2,483 Comments

  1. Last evening Luna was away from 8:28p.m. to 9:21p.m.

She returned soaked. Seems she had herself a wonderful bath in the nearby stream. Owlet (SOl) was one happy owlet after she returned.

  2. Photos to add from yesterday. A fantastic day for Luna and owlet (Sol) and any of us lucky enough to view.

Let us know when it’s official!

  3. Carol we love the name so much. That was the name for the owelette last year. Great minds think alike

  4. Andrew, I was thinking along the lines of Estrella, Spanish for star.
Deb suggested Stela. Little one is definitely that.

  5. We are leaning towards Sol since mamma is Luna(MOON) and papa is Noche(NIGHT)but we can be swayed.

  6. We are thinking of baby names and wanted to know what everyone thought of Sol(SUN)?

  7. Great pictures, Fran. It looks as if the eyes have opened. Can’t wait to see the color — supposedly bluish grey.

  8. Sara, lovely shot of owlet with eye still closed along with egg.

Posting an early morning shot which appears to show other side of egg and a not very clear view of owlet.

  9. Cute Sarah!

Noche delivered a frog earlier and Luna gulped it down, then flew off.
They are amazing and everyday, something new. You and Andrew have each gotten that same photo, of Luna with her beak on the egg, always enjoyed seeing that, haven’t captured it yet!

  10. Update on the egg incident!!!
The egg may have been left atop the perch/ledge when Luna flew off. The egg did leave the nest box but looks like it remained on the perch until Luna returned and rolled it back inside. Then, soon after reentered the nest herself.

The photo of Luna’s return, sitting on the perch, looks like the egg may be behind her.

It was too far fetched that it would have stayed attached.
Also, the perch/ledge saved the egg from a long fall down.
Apologies for any confusion. I was confused and very surprised, myself.

Day 39 at least, for the egg. Owlet is 8 days old today.

  11. Thanks for the picture of the stash. Noche is quite a good provider! You may not have seen the owlet today but from the struggle Luna has sleeping on top of him, I would say he is alive and well.

  12. Panning reveals how wonderfully large the nest box is and how much food is stored.

Life is good. A fantastic day once again for the barred owls.

Haven’t seen owlet in the daylight hours. Day 39 for the egg.

  13. Last photo from the flying egg incident!

You can see how the egg is blurry and the owlet is much more clear.
This is due to movement, when the egg fell into the nest and was rolling.

Owlet is peaking out, really amazing that he/she knows where the entrance is.

  14. 3 of 3.
Another look at the egg, stuck to Luna’s feathers.

Speaking of feathers, look at the owlet, hint of feathers coming in there. Eyes are opening more. Beautiful owls.

  15. 2 of 3.
Luna is about to hop up, a little spring in her step at this point.

  17. More photos from last nights egg incident. 1 of 3 photos.

You can get a good look here at the feathers, stuck to the egg.
This was Luna standing, preparing to hop up and out.
Seeing her leave with egg attached was a shocker and sad sight, the egg was gone. Imagined it falling off in flight and forever gone.

This egg has fooled us quite a few times now.

  18. Great story about the egg. I do think it has a role as a security blanket for the owlet. Luna is fascinating.
