  2. The Owl Cam Sound Library link has a “Peeping Call.”

    This chirping signals to the female, it won’t be long for hatch and at that point, asking for help cracking the egg.

    Luna has stomped a few times already today, which is an indication that she is offering assistance to her second egg.

    We wondered about her stomps and after watching her hold egg#1 with her foot, roll it and use her beak, it was realized that Luna was assisting her egg to hatch and so she repeats these things with egg #2.

    Another fantastic, promising day for the owls!!!

    Lynn’s link is the best for a concise user-friendly guide, which I’ve found very helpful.

    I guess we can just focus our thoughts today on the upcoming second hatch. Most likely won’t see much activity for first hatchling — too much expenditure of energy and trauma from the hatching process.
    We Black Vulture lovers know something about that.

    “peeps” from egg indicate to female, get food ready, I’ll be there soon. Also tells female it is time to help crack the shell.

    Twice in the 5 minutes, Luna has stomped.
    She stomped quite a few times a couple days ago and now perhaps it is
    assisting egg #2.

    Is the knocking Luna’s leg? Incredible…

  5. Chirping and Luna coos in response, one single note.
    Photo is very similar to Carol’s, but want to document prey.
    Much more visible in the light!

    What I have called chirps are documented as Peep Calls in the “Owl Sound” link we have been posting. This peep is used by owlet from the time it penetrates the shell. Variations used for duration of nesting period. Alerts adults to stockpile food and tells female when chick is ready for help cracking shell. Similar to adult female chatter, but clearly made by owlet. – from the following:

  6. Ah, how perfect the timing of the natural world, how amazing avian breeding behavior. Two perfect eggs hatching so close together, giving both the chance to develop into healthy youngsters. Luna’s instincts – ancient of days. You can bet on them.

  7. If in fact, this hatch was egg #1, then egg #2 is 32 days old today.

    Time will tell.

  8. Luna had prey in foot. Owlet begins life with a meat pillow, as any well deserving owlet should.

    As soon as Luna began to tug at prey, she began to coo and bond with the owlet. She would grab a morsel, feed and look up, as if she was looking outside. Keeping watch, looking for Noche. This was when there was the best chance to see the little one. Now getting a good still pic is another thing!

    Egg#2 is in there somewhere. Are some of those chirps coming from egg#2?

  11. Oh, Fran, thank you so much for being our eyes and for posting the momentous moments and your excitement to Forum. May Day Owlets. Raise the Maypole and hang the crepe paper streamers – make that velvet, just like Luna’s eyes. You’re right about school. Yesterday was the last day of teaching. I came home, posted a shot of Luna and my thoughts and turned in. Just awoke now to the glorious news.

    Congratulations to Luna and Noche and the lessors of “Andrew’s Woods.”

  12. 11:28pm She’s calling and the owlet chirps too.

    1:52am Noche enters the nest box, with them. Exits after a short visit.

    1:54am Luna eats egg shell.

    2:01am-2:08am Noche called to her, a barking call, fast repetitive for nearly 8 minutes.She whistled but quit after a few minutes.

    I did not see a food drop. After he left she ate the egg shell, unsure of she finished it.

  17. May Day would be such a lovely day to welcome Luna’s first owlet into the world. “Andrew’s Woods” — what a lovely world it is. Voles, moles, bats and a whole miscellany of nourishing and tasty owl fodder. Oh, and the glorious birdsong floating on the air.

  21. 5:54 am according to date and time, seems I saw it wrong, imagine at 5:59am nothing will have changed. lol

  22. 11:57pm Last night, food drop. Luna nibbled at prey. but it appeared she saved it.

    12:55am, same. Food drop and she wasn’t in view to eat it, but it seemed she pushed it in the lower right corner area.

    5:28am she left nest box
    5:31am they could be heard hooting and calling back and forth.

    Could possibly be a crack in the egg, or a feather, like before.
    5:33am Pretty Luna is back, she settles on the eggs n stares outside as she always does.

    5:59am she’s much drier already. Still staring out, listening…

  23. Heavy, steady rains, will this effect Noche’s hunting? Would seem to flood out rodents and underground critters? Easier to find flushed out prey? Or will they be scattered… to be determined.

  24. Pretty Luna, she’s taking care of those eggs.

    As much as we want to see a pip and observe pip and hatch, she surely knows best for now and she’s not budging.

    Water droplets are splashing in from the balcony. Owl and eggs are well and good, all things considered. That is one sturdy well built nest box and one amazing owl.
