I’m glad everyone likes the new CAM. It really makes us all happy to think that more will be learned from our camera. I like to think that some teachers out there are using this feed to educate their students as well. I can only imagine how great it would have been to see something like this when I was a kid in school. When the season is over we hope to reconfigure some things to make it even better for next year. We just hope they will be back.

What more could we ask for, Andrew? What an extraordinary opportunity to learn more about Barred Owls. Of all owls, the least is known about the Barred Owl and so this is especially exciting. Thank you so much.

Pretty Luna, are you hungry?
whining call..? always interesting!
Used by female to call to owlets when she leaves them alone in nest and after they leave the nest to become branchers. Also used by female in nest when food runs out. Appears to be urging male to bring more food and is repeated endlessly on “hungry days”.

Egg #1 is 21 days/3 weeks today.
Patti commented(Soc Stream) that Luna chattered to herself today. I read the females will begin to communicate with the embryos 2 weeks before hatch, sounds good to me!
A fantastic day in the barred owl nest box! Luna broods, rests comfortably. She eyed the cam today and began to chew, good thing she lost interest.
Another fantastic week in the nest box. Lunar eclipse, temps from 80° to 30°, blowing winds and rain. The owls and eggs all look great, safe high and dry.
8:24pm Noche brings a frog.
His calling was a classic hoot, then drop off without entering the nest box.

Fascinating that he has at least two different calls for food drop.
Luna is resting comfy. Surely, listening to saws and sounds outside.

8:15am cam view went topsy turvy!
Luna, eggs and nest box are all good.
Asimko22 said she didn’t appear interested in the frog, that may explain him staying a bit longer. Appears that he favors hunting in the stream.
Birds chirping in nest box area. Luna has shimmied a couple times this morning.
7:26am She exited the nest box. Two eggs visible, but not fully in view.
7:32am She returns, shimmied and settled back on her eggs.
Beautiful view of eggs this morning. Don’t know when Luna left or why. You can clearly see here the somewhat rough texture on the surface, which is characteristic of Barred Owl eggs.
Must tell people I cannot talk on the phone in the evenings! Nearly missed it again.

8:26pm Noche enters the nest box and does food drop. It was small and not visible, but could see she ate.
Chart with info is waiting moderation! Info such as the stages in days of the embryos.
I heard loud sounds outside of the box. Noche may be very near. It’s been a couple minutes now. This would have been about 5:02pm.
Development of a barn owl embryo, the incubation is about 30-31 days.
In the images, going from left to right are as follows:
6 days, 8 days, 10 days, 11 days
12 days, 15 days, 20 days and lastly 30-31 days
I was fascinated to compare a 20 day Barred Owl egg,
they are truly coming along inside those shells, high hopes!

Naturally beautiful Luna! She’s having another fantastic day. Resting, conserving energy, brooding. All is good.
Luna and Noche’s behaviors have changed a bit, in that he appears to have stopped entering the nest box, at least the last few times I’ve seen him visit. Food drop is short and much less calls. He isn’t hooting as much and she isn’t cooing, responding back to him as she used to. Communication between the two has changed.
The honeymoon is not over! But may be a predator has been in the area.
Birds were chirping away early. Quite noticeable the area is currently very quiet.
1:37am Luna returned. Shimmies n settles on her eggs.
1:31am she had unidentified suspect prey. Flew out. She was close to cam, unsure what she had. Looked large.
1:28 am Noche visits but, didn’t see food drop.
Abt 9:09 pm she was gone for abt 8 minutes? Was on the phone, turned too see Luna on her tippy toes, possibly a food drop. Then soon after she left. Cam panned slightly during this time. Saw both eggs!
